There have been many improvements in hull and oar design over the years, but oarlocks have remained relatively unchanged. Flexoars® believed that this basic but critical link between the rower and shell could benefit from a fresh design, so five years ago we started with a clean sheet of paper and went to work.
First we spoke with rowers and identified some of the shortcomings of current oarlocks, such as the loose, power robbing connection, the possibility of accidental gate openings, crabs and limited onboard adjustability. Then we created dozens of designs, the most promising of which became prototypes that were tested on the water with rowers of all abilities in all types of conditions.
We now have a product that meets or exceeds all of our initial goals. Rollerlock® provides a smooth, controlled, adjustable system that helps rowers produce more consistent stokes and moves oarlock technology into the 21st century. The improvements embodied in Rollerlock® will make the sport more efficient, safer and more enjoyable so athletes can concentrate on rowing well.
Provides rowers with an overdue choice in oarlocks.
Available for both sweeps and sculls.
Symmetrical design – can be used on port or starboard.
Weight is estimated to be about 15% more than traditional oarlock systems.
Compatible with all oars, outriggers and rowing shells on the market.
Accommodates all pin sizes: (9/16” & 13mm for sweep and ½” & 13mm for Scull)
Draw latch locks securely, cannot open accidentally and needs no adjustment.
Pitch Tool helps set correct oar pitch when mounting of sleeve on oar shaft.
Mechanical sleeve mounting system eliminates the need for epoxy.
Provides a more secure connection between the rower and rowing shell.
Improved feedback to the rower results in more consistent strokes.
Round shape means less wear along with smooth, quiet, slop free oar rotation.
Vibrations normally transmitted to the shell are substantially reduced.
Cams help position the blade at the catch and finish like the flat sides of traditional oarlocks.
Cams also prevent over rotation on recovery further preventing dangerous crabs.
Oar can be locked in the oarlock for training or rough water conditions.
Easy to Adjust.
Pitch adjustments of +/- 4 degrees set with pitch bushings on the oarlock.
Fine pitch adjustments of +/- 3 degrees set on the Cam Block on the oar.
Blade depth limitations can be set on the oarlock to help prevent crabs.
Inboard is adjusted in increments of 1 mm over the entire 11 CM range.
Turn sleeve Collar one way to increase inboard, the other way to decrease Inboard.
Rollerlock Oarlock Cost and Maintenance
Easy to maintain and service in the boathouse.
Rollerlock® can be disassembled for cleaning or to replace individual parts if needed.
Affordable – anticipated cost is between $100 and $125 (U.S.) per complete system.
Total annual ownership costs will be about equal to oarlock systems currently in use.
Rollerlock’s unique features will help rowing be safer and more enjoyable and will offer rowers a choice in addition to traditional oarlocks. Rollerlock will dramatically reduce the likelihood of crabs, can be easily adjusted to changing conditions and will allow rowers of all skill levels to focus on timing, coordination and posture to achieve clean, consistent strokes.
